Safaa is an Arabic name for girls that means “purity”, “innocence”. If spelled slightly differently in Arabic (but pronounced the same in English), it can also refer to a hill in Mecca, and its relation to Islam is due to the importance of this hill to the Hajj proceedings, which commemorate Hajar when she ran between the two hills searching for water for her son Ismaeel (alaihuma salam). It is mentioned once in the Quran:
Indeed, the Safaa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah. So whoever makes Hajj to the House or performs ‘umrah – there is no blame upon him for walking between them. And whoever volunteers good – then indeed, Allah is appreciative and Knowing. {2:158}
